Me, Myself, and I
These words never
die.
Mankind
has always asked this question; why does one love his/her self? Well, aren't we
like this? We often look at the mirror and we groom ourselves. Doesn't that
show that we love ourselves? To what degree?
What
is narcissism? Narcissism is a fixation with one’s self. It came from
Narcissus, the son of a river god named Cephissus and a nymph named Linope.
Let
me tell you a story that came from a Greek Mythology that is all about a young
boy who fell in love with his own reflection. Being too much proud of himself,
he despised those who loved him. Nemesis the goddess of revenge noticed his
attitude and influenced Narcissus to go to a pool of water, where he could see
his reflection. After that, he knelt daily beside a lake to contemplate his own
beauty. Unable to leave his reflection, he drowned.

Nowadays,
not all but many people are obsessed with themselves. They often look at the
mirror, take selfies, and put too much make up even without special occasions. In
Psychology, there is a so called Narcissistic Personality Disorder where it
involves arrogant behavior, lack of empathy for other people, and a need of
admiration. It can actually lead to selfishness and having this lack of empathy
and we may not have friends that we can lean on in times of sorrow. That is how
dangerous being a narcissistic in psychology is!
“Gandang-ganda
sa sarili”, “Gwapong-gwapo sa sarili”, or “Pogi Problems” These famous lines
are very popular in many social media sites like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram,
etc. Of course, not all people who takes slefies a lot and looking at the
mirror every time are narcissistic. But too much of those may lead to
narcissism that can affect you and the people around you. So ask yourselves. Am
I narcissisic?
Okay, so I'll leave you with this picture.
